Southampton County Courthouse Renovation & Expansion
Courtland, Virginia
The historic Southampton County Courthouse in Courtland, Virginia, a key contributor to the Courtland Historic District and listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places, stands as a testament to Jeffersonian architectural principles. Built in 1834, the courthouse has played a significant role in America’s history, notably as the site of the 1831 Nat Turner trial. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations, most recently addressing structural challenges and functional needs to preserve its legacy.
The project involved extensive renovations and a 28,614-square-foot addition, seamlessly integrating modern amenities while maintaining the building’s historical integrity. Key updates include secure public entrances, advanced courtroom technology, and improved circulation paths, all while preserving the courthouse’s original brick façade. The renovation also included redesigning the 1960s addition and constructing a new two-story section to enhance security and accessibility. This thoughtful renovation ensures the courthouse continues to serve the community while honoring its historical significance.
Collaborating with G&H on this project was associate architect Silling Architects, who provided programing, concept design and construction documents for the interior of the courthouse.
